Inside Story

Is the world suffering from pandemic fatigue?

Tough coronavirus measures are becoming increasingly difficult to enforce because many complain of exhaustion.

With no end in sight to the coronavirus crisis, governments are warning of pandemic fatigue.

Protective measures are being flouted and more of us are dropping our guard. And that, health experts warn, threatens yet another resurgence in infections.

Until a vaccine is developed, social distancing and mask wearing remain critical in containing the virus. But after months of lockdowns and disruptions of normal life, many people say they are simply exhausted.

The World Health Organization says sacrifices made to contain COVID-19 have come at an extraordinary cost. And governments are being urged to approach restrictions in creative ways.

Will “pandemic fatigue” super-charge the next wave of COVID-19?
