Satire and politics flood Australian supermarket’s war memorial campaign

An Australian supermarket’s campaign to commemorate World War One veterans was taken down on Tuesday after heavy criticism and satire online.

Woolworths Supermarkets created a website titled “Fresh In Our Memories” to mark Anzac Day, a national day of remembrance on the anniversary of Australia’s entrance into the First World War.

The website featured a profile picture generator where users could upload photos of people “affected or lost to war” and make an image with Woolworths branding.

Some responded by using the campaign to highlight political issues in Australia, such as the death of asylum-seeker Reza Berati.
