    Here’s what happened today

This live page will soon close. Here’s a recap of the main developments:

    • Israel’s army killed at least 112 Palestinians in Gaza since dawn, 71 in Gaza City in the north, with dozens of children, women and elderly among the dead.
    • The Israeli army again claimed it is targeting “terrorists” in Gaza and reported hitting 600 targets in the enclave since breaking the ceasefire on March 18 with relentless bombing.
    • Israeli troops launched their deepest ground assault into Syria so far as warplanes bombed a military base in the southern suburbs of Damascus.
    • The Alma ash-Shaab and Naqoura areas in southern Lebanon came under attack from Israeli fighter jets and helicopter gunships.
    • After more US air strikes on Yemen, the Houthis claimed to have launched missiles at the USS Harry S Truman aircraft carrier and said they downed MQ-9 Reaper drones.
    • Israeli forces raided areas in the occupied West Bank and shot dead at least two Palestinians in separate incidents as Israeli settlers also continued attacks.
    • Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Hungarian counterpart Viktor Orban spoke to Donald Trump about fighting the International Criminal Court over his arrest warrant related to alleged Gaza crimes.

US doctor describes ‘damage-control surgery’ after Israeli attacks

Dr Alison Kinning, a vascular surgeon who volunteered in Gaza, says a medical team that attempted to bring medicine and other health supplies into the territory had it confiscated by Israeli forces.

“It’s devastating to know there’s things that I could’ve and would’ve done differently had I had the resources,” she told Al Jazeera.

Kinning described the scene in the European-Gaza Hospital where she worked as “shocking” after Israel broke the ceasefire and began attacking the Strip relentlessly.

“I woke up in bed to the sound of bombing, which I never heard before. It was obviously terrifying. After that night it became much more damage-control surgery – trauma wounds, amputations,” she said.

“There were quite a few children. Some, fortunately, I was able to do some reconstructions and save limbs. But unfortunately, quite a few others required amputations as life-saving measures.”

Oscar-winning Palestinian director speaks at UN on illegal Israeli settlements

Palestinian director Basel Adra, who won an Oscar this year for co-directing a documentary on Israeli violence in the occupied West Bank, sounded the alarm at the UN saying the situation is worsening despite the film’s success.

Adra was invited to speak by the UN Committee on the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People at a screening of his film, No Other Land.

The documentary chronicles the forced displacement of Palestinians by Israeli troops and settlers in Masafer Yatta – an area Israel declared a “restricted military zone” in the 1980s.

“I wanted the world to know that we live in this land, that we exist, and to see what we face on daily basis, this brutal occupation,” Adra told the UN.

“Even after winning the Oscar, we went back to the same reality,” Adra said, adding it’s “only changing from worse to worse”.

“Almost every day, there are settler attacks on Masafer Yatta and all over communities across the West Bank.”

Two Palestinians shot by Israeli forces west of Bethlehem

At least two Palestinians have been shot and wounded by Israeli soldiers during a raid near Husan village, west of Bethlehem, in the occupied West Bank.

Israeli forces completely closed off the area and prevented vehicles from passing, a local official told the Wafa news agency.

The Palestine Red Crescent Society said its first responders were prevented from approaching the wounded individuals and forced to leave the area.

Gaza faces ‘largest orphan crisis’ in modern history

Tens of thousands of Palestinian children have lost their parents since the start of Israel’s war on the besieged Gaza Strip, the Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics says.

“These children are living in tragic conditions with many forced to take refuge in torn tents or destroyed homes in a near-total absence of social care and psychological support,” a statement by the bureau said.

“The Gaza Strip is suffering from the largest orphan crisis in modern history.”

Pregnant woman, 10 children among the dead in southern Gaza

While dozens of Palestinians died in Israeli attacks in northern Gaza, the south wasn’t spared either.

In the southern city of Khan Younis, officials said the bodies of 14 people were taken to Nasser Hospital – nine of them from the same family. The dead included five children and four women.

The bodies of another 19 people – including five children aged between one and seven years and a pregnant woman – were taken to the European Hospital near Khan Younis, hospital officials said.

Later in the day, strikes killed four more people in Khan Younis, according to Nasser Hospital officials, and another two people were killed in central Gaza and taken to Al-Aqsa Hospital.

Medic killings ‘one of the darkest moments’ of Israel’s war: Red Crescent

We’ve been reporting on 15 emergency workers who were killed after coming under Israeli fire in southern Gaza’s Rafah city last month.

Palestine Red Crescent Society’s president, Younes al-Khatib, said the killings were “one of the darkest moments in this conflict that has shaken our shared humanity to its core”.

“The souls of [the team] are asking for justice. Can you hear them?” he asked while speaking before the UN Security Council.

Al-Khatib demanded to know the fate of a 16th team member still missing.

“It’s worth noting also that during the communication with the team, the dispatch could hear a conversation in Hebrew between the Israeli forces and the team, meaning some were alive – still alive – when they were under the control of the Israeli forces,” al-Khatib said.

Deadly Israeli fire on Gaza ambulances possible war crime: UN

The killing of 15 medics and emergency workers in Gaza two weeks ago raises further concerns of “war crimes by the Israeli army”, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk says.

“I am appalled by the recent killings of 15 medical personnel and humanitarian aid workers, which raise further concerns over the commission of war crimes by the Israeli military,” Turk said before the UN Security Council.

He added there must be an “independent, prompt and thorough investigation into these killings”.

“Those responsible for any violation of international law must be held to account.”

Israeli helicopters attack southern Lebanon’s Naqoura

Two Israeli helicopter gunships carried out three raids on the town of Naqoura in southern Lebanon’s Tyre district, according to the official National News Agency.

Ambulances and civil defence personnel rushed to the site as Israeli helicopters and reconnaissance aircraft continued to hover above, also reaching as far as Labbouneh, east of Naqoura.

Naqoura was reportedly hit by several Israeli drone strikes this morning that targeted ambulances run by the local health authority at the municipality square, which also damaged the municipality building.

Netanyahu coming to US to talk about ‘Gaza problem’: Trump

Speaking on Air Force One, US President Donald Trump says Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will soon visit Washington for talks on the dire situation in Gaza.

“I spoke to him today, in fact, and I think he’s going to come to our country in the not-so-distant future, maybe next week,” Trump told reporters.

“We’re going to try and solve the Gaza problem, it’s been a big, big problem for many decades. If you notice hostages are being released now, and that’s happened only since I got involved. I’d like to get as many hostages as we can.”

Trump described Gaza as a “very important thing”.

“It’s been under siege for many years. It’s a shame. A lot of people die in Gaza. A lot of bad things happen in Gaza. We’ll see what we can do about it.”

Israeli army says 600 Gaza ‘terror targets’ hit since breaking ceasefire

The Israeli military says it has attacked more than 600 “terror targets” across the Gaza Strip since shattering the truce with Hamas on March 18 with relentless bombing.

“We have struck more than 600 terrorist targets since the resumption of fighting. … The only thing that could slow us down is the release of our hostages,” military spokesman Brigadier General Effie Defrin said in televised remarks.

In a separate statement posted on X, the military’s Arabic-language spokesman Avichay Adraee said more than “250 terrorists, including 12 senior terrorists in Hamas and its ruling arm” have been killed since March 18.

The Health Ministry in Gaza said 1,163 people – the majority of them children and women – have been killed in the Palestinian territory since Israel’s war resumed.

Amnesty slams Hungary’s ICC exit as a ‘betrayal’ of war crime victims

The rights group Amnesty International has condemned Hungary’s decision to withdraw from the ICC, describing it as a “betrayal of all victims of war crimes”.

The UK-based group’s secretary-general, Agnes Callamard, said leaders and officials from ICC member states must not undermine the court by meeting Netanyahu or other wanted fugitives.

“By welcoming Netanyahu, Hungary is effectively giving a seal of approval to Israel’s genocide, namely the physical destruction of the Palestinian people in whole or in part in Gaza,” Callamard said.

“Hungary’s purported withdrawal from the ICC is a brazen and futile attempt to evade international justice and to stymy the ICC’s work.

“Its withdrawal is a betrayal of all victims of war crimes and undermines the protections afforded the Hungarian people as it removes, in a year, their opportunity to seek justice at the ICC for crimes committed against them.”

Bernie Sanders fails in push to block US arms shipments to Israel

The US Senate has overwhelmingly voted against measures proposed by Senator Bernie Sanders to block the sale of $8.8bn in American weaponry to Israel, including more than 35,000 highly destructive 2,000-pound bombs.

A first bill was defeated in a 82-15 vote, with all supporters being Democrats. A second bill is expected to face the same fate in the overwhelmingly pro-Israel chamber.

Sanders said during a speech on the Senate floor that US arms have been linked to “dozens of illegal air strikes, including on designated humanitarian areas, resulting in thousands of civilian casualties”.

“None of these systems are necessary to protect Israel from incoming drone or rocket attacks.”

Sanders warned, however, if a US politician votes against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu “and his horrific war in Gaza”, major pro-Israel lobby group AIPAC “will punish you with millions of dollars in advertisements to see that you’re defeated”.

Turkiye accuses Israel of ‘expansionist policies’

Israel must withdraw from Syria and stop harming stabilisation efforts there, Turkiye says.

“Israel has become the greatest threat to regional security” and is a “strategic destabiliser causing chaos and feeding terrorism”, the Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

“Therefore, in order to establish security throughout the region, Israel must first abandon its expansionist policies, withdraw from the territories it occupies, and stop undermining efforts to establish stability in Syria,” it said.

“There was no provocation or assault directed at Israel from the Syrian field. These simultaneous attacks demonstrate a foreign policy understanding that thrives on conflict.”

‘Searching for shelters every hour now,’ says displaced Palestinian

We’ve been reporting on Israeli forced evacuation orders for areas in northern Gaza.

About 135,000 Palestinians have fled over the past 24 hours, most on foot, with some carrying their belongings on their backs and others using donkey carts.

“My wife and I have been walking for three hours covering only 1km [0.6 miles],” Mohammad Ermana, 72, said. The couple, clasping hands, each walked with a cane.

“I’m searching for shelters every hour now, not every day,” he said.

Israel has issued sweeping evacuation orders for parts of northern Gaza ahead of an expected major ground assault.

The United Nations humanitarian office said about 280,000 Palestinians have been displaced since Israel ended the ceasefire with Hamas on March 18 with a flurry of deadly attacks.
