How to secure global sporting events?

As the return of major sporting events draws thousands of fans to stadiums, UN agencies are working to boost security.

Major global sporting events draw tens of thousands of fans, athletes, journalists and support staff, making them prime targets for potential attacks.

Three UN counterterrorism agencies and the Doha-based International Centre for Sport Security have launched what they call the first global guide on securing such events.

It comes as tournaments postponed by the pandemic resume their schedule, including the Euro 2020 football championships and the Tokyo Summer Olympics.

What must be done to keep people safe? And will the pandemic pose further challenges?
