Inside Story

Is it time to take the Taliban seriously?

Taliban fighters take territory as foreign troops withdraw from Afghanistan and peace talks stall.

US-led foreign troops are leaving Afghanistan after 20 years of war, and the Taliban is quickly filling the power vacuum.

Fighters have made swift advances in the past few months, capturing districts and border crossings with little resistance from government forces.

The Taliban claims it now controls 85 percent of the country.

Talks with the Afghan government in Doha have made little progress.

So what does the future hold for the people of Afghanistan?
