The United Nations Security Council has said it has secured the unconditional agreement of the Sudanese government for the deployment of a joint African Union-UN peacekeeping for to Darfur.
Dumisani Kumalo, the South African ambassador to the UN, said: “Sudan has accepted the hybrid force without any conditionality … The acceptance was confirmed by President Bashir.”
UN officials have said that the expanded Darfur force will consist of between 17,500 and 19,600 troops, in addition to more than 6,000 police who will help maintain security in the region’s displaced person camps where allegations of rape and other abuses remain widespread.
How will the deal work, and how far it can go towards resolving the conflict which has left more than 200,000 people dead and an estimated 2.5 million displaced?
