Philippines massacre remembrance marred by witness’ murder

November 23 marks the fifth anniversary of a deadly attack on journalists in the Philippine province of Maguindanao.

A witness to the 2009 Ampatuan Massacre in the Philippines was murdered and his companion injured, reportedly while on their way to formalize testimony before a court hearing on the incident. The attack comes just days before the 5th anniversary of the massacre, where 58 people, including 32 journalists, were allegedly killed by members of the Ampatuan clan. According to reports, the killings were carried out to prevent a gubernatorial bid from an opposing candidate.
