Is ISIL facing a cash crunch?
The US says it has destroyed up to $800m of ISIL cash, but has it dented the armed groups’ finances?
‘The best-funded terrorist organisation in the world.’ That was how the United States Treasury assessed the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant’s (ISIL, also known as ISIS) finances two years ago.
The armed group itself says it had a budget of $2bn last year – a figure that can not be independently verified. But now it appears the US-led coalition is having some success in denting ISIL’s finances.
