Inside Story

What’s behind acquitting top army generals in Algeria?

Two military generals and the brother of former President Abdelaziz Bouteflika have been acquitted by a military court.

In Algeria, the younger brother of deposed president Abdelaziz Bouteflika and two former intelligence chiefs jailed during mass protests in 2019, were acquitted by a military court.

Said Bouteflika and Generals Mohamed Mediene and Athmane Tartag were sentenced to 15 years in prison for plotting against the state and undermining the army.

The three were the highest-profile prosecutions after the president resigned in April 2019 following 20 years in power and months of protests against his rule.

Will this trigger renewed public anger?
