- Iran’s Foreign Ministry says a deal with Oman on the Strait of Hormuz is being “finalised” and the two countries have agreed on coordinates for routes through the waterway, but that the US and Israel still pose a danger to ships.
- Iran’s state broadcaster IRIB has quoted an informed source as saying the talks between Iran and Oman “have nothing to do with the United States”.
- Israel’s military says it has started carrying out attacks on southern Lebanon in response to a “blatant violation of the ceasefire” by Hezbollah. One person has so far been reported killed and 11 injured in the offensive. Earlier, Israeli media reported that two Israeli soldiers were killed and several others were wounded after an improvised explosive device exploded inside a booby-trapped building in the Lebanese village of Majdal Selem.
- Israeli forces have carried out large-scale raids in several areas of the occupied West Bank.
- In Gaza, Israeli soldiers have entered the Qalandiya refugee camp, storming homes and detaining Palestinians. Israeli gunfire and shelling have been reported in neighbourhoods across the enclave.

We are about to close this page. Before we go, here’s a recap of the day’s main developments:

- Israel carried out another strike in southern Lebanon, near Burj Shemali, after killing at least one person in an earlier strike on Tebnin.
- Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan warned that Israel’s expansionist policies could produce a global crisis, saying it has “no intention or plan for peace”.

WATCH: Abdul El-Sayed wins Michigan Democratic primary for Senate in blow to AIPAC
Abdul El-Sayed, a doctor and progressive candidate, defeated four-term US Congresswoman Haley Stevens despite tens of millions of dollars spent by pro-Israel groups, primarily the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), backing her campaign.
His win exposes rifts within the Democratic Party over its stance on Israel’s war on Gaza as it seeks direction under Trump’s second presidency.

Iraq’s governing coalition warns armed groups face ‘terrorism’ law after deadline
Iraq’s governing State Administration Coalition has backed continued efforts to bring all weapons under state control and prevent attacks on neighbouring states from taking place inside the country.
In a statement issued by the prime minister’s media office, the coalition said using weapons without state authorisation or forming armed groups outside the official security forces was a constitutional violation.
“Anyone who threatens the country’s security will be considered an outlaw who must be confronted,” it said.
The coalition also condemned attacks against Iraqi armed forces and called for adherence to the timetable for bringing weapons under state control by September 30, 2026.
It said any armed activity outside the state’s authority after the deadline would be dealt with under Iraq’s anti-terrorism law.

Israel again bombs southern Lebanon
An Israeli strike has hit the town of Burj Shemali in southern Lebanon’s Tyre district, our correspondent on the ground reports.
Earlier today, Israeli strikes killed one person in the town of Tibnin, while two Israeli soldiers were killed in an explosion inside a booby-trapped building in southern Lebanon.
The uptick in violence brings fears of escalation as the Lebanese and Israeli governments conduct direct talks in Rome.

‘I’d rather make a deal with Iran – I don’t want to kill people’: Trump
Trump says Washington is holding talks with Tehran and would prefer an agreement to further military action.
Speaking in Las Vegas, Nevada, Trump claimed the US had been preparing to launch “the biggest attack since World War II” before Iranian officials asked for negotiations.
“We were all set for the biggest attack since World War II, and they [the Iranians] called me and said, ‘Please don’t do it. Let’s talk,’” he said.
“I would rather make a deal with Iran because I don’t want to kill people,” Trump added, while reiterating that Tehran could not be allowed to obtain a nuclear weapon.

WATCH: Qalandiya camp raid raises fears of mass displacement and demolitions
Israeli forces raid the Qalandiya refugee camp, a strategic artery between Ramallah and occupied East Jerusalem.
Residents report home invasions, property damage, and makeshift interrogation centres inside their houses.
Paramedics treat several injuries, including people severely beaten by occupation soldiers.
Palestinian officials say Israel’s right-wing government has turned the raid into election propaganda, raising fears of Jenin camp-style destruction and mass displacement.

Iran-Oman Hormuz shipping route deal nears final stage
Iran says it has reached an understanding with Oman on the geographical coordinates of a new shipping route in the Strait of Hormuz, bringing weeks of negotiations closer to a formal agreement.
Now, these discussions are at the final drafting stage, pending a joint final statement. But Iranian officials argue that these discussions are exclusively with Oman, without any foreign or outside interference.
They also say that any agreement does not mean that the situation will be brought back to the pre-war conditions, arguing that the military actions and the naval blockade imposed by the United States on Iran are the cause of the disruption of navigation at the Strait of Hormuz.
But on the other hand, Washington rejects reports suggesting that Iran would have control over traffic at the Strait of Hormuz, and says that any temporary route should not require any permits, approvals or fees.
In Iran, President Masoud Pezeshkian, during the second anniversary of his inauguration, said that Iran’s enemies have targeted military commanders, scientists and the country’s strategic capabilities to undermine the country’s resilience and technological progress.
So now, a final agreement on a temporary route in the Strait of Hormuz is in the making, but the dispute remains unresolved.
That means that any agreement on a shipping route at the Strait of Hormuz does not necessarily mean the end of the crisis.

Turkish Foreign Minister warns Israeli expansionism could trigger global crisis
Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan says Israel has “no intention or plan for peace” and is using diplomatic platforms to advance its “illegal strategies”.
“This is not something only we see; the whole world sees it. Israel has no intention or plan regarding peace. It merely uses every platform to advance its own position and illegal strategies,” Fidan told TRT Arabi after meetings in the Jordanian capital, Amman.
“If regional countries and the international community do not take the necessary diplomatic measures to curb Israel’s expansionist policies, this will produce not only a regional crisis but a global one,” he added.
Fidan made the remarks after attending a ministerial meeting on Jerusalem as well as separate talks involving Turkiye, Egypt, Pakistan and Saudi Arabia on the Gaza peace plan and wider regional tensions.

Israeli army chief says will continue Gaza operations
Israeli army chief Eyal Zamir says the army will continue “proactive” operations in Gaza, according to a statement from the Israeli military.
“We have significantly weakened Hamas and changed the security reality,” Zamir said during a field tour in Gaza. “We will continue to act proactively in the Gaza Strip, remove threats and defend Israeli communities and residents.
“A clear example of this is the pursuit of Nukhba fighters and everyone who took part in planning and carrying out the October 7 attack,” he said, referring to the special force unit of Hamas’s military wing.
Zamir’s remarks come days after the Board of Peace’s Gaza representative, Nickolay Mladenov, met Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to discuss a plan to disarm Hamas and transfer the enclave to civilian governance. Mladenov also urged Israel to halt its attacks on Gaza as the board moved forward with the agreement, according to AP.

‘Hormuz unlikely to return to pre-war status’
Sina Azodi, assistant professor of Middle East Politics at George Washington University, says the understanding Iran and Oman are working towards regarding the Strait of Hormuz represents both a diplomatic compromise and a recognition of Iran’s strategic influence in the Gulf.
Speaking to Al Jazeera, Azodi said he doubts the status of the Strait of Hormuz will ever return to how it was before the US-Israeli war on Iran began.
“The Iranians have learned that by blockading the Strait of Hormuz, they can make the global economy scream,” he said. “This is a strategic asset, and I don’t think they will let go of it easily.”
However, he said Oman has been a “very helpful, trustworthy mediator” between Iran and the US, helping to move towards the eventual reopening of the waterway.
“Oman’s role has always been very positive,” said Azodi. “The Iranians trust Oman; the Americans trust Oman.”

Israel slams Arab committee’s Jerusalem declaration
Israel’s Foreign Ministry has rejected a declaration issued by the Arab Ministerial Committee on occupied Jerusalem, calling it “built on false accusations, historical distortions, and a complete disregard for the facts” in a post on X.
The statement came after Arab foreign ministers meeting in Amman condemned what they described as Israel’s escalating policies and measures in occupied Jerusalem and launched a joint diplomatic effort to respond. The committee includes Jordan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Palestine and other Arab states, alongside the Arab League.
In response, Israel said Jerusalem is “the eternal capital of the State of Israel”, insisting it remains committed to preserving freedom of worship and the status quo at the Temple Mount (Al-Aqsa Mosque), while accusing the declaration of ignoring “the Jewish people’s historic connection to Jerusalem and its holiest sites”.

Yemen FM, UN envoy discuss Houthi attacks on Red Sea shipping
The foreign minister for Yemen’s internationally recognised government, Afrah al-Zouba, has discussed the political and humanitarian situation in Yemen with UN Special Envoy Hans Grundberg, according to Yemen’s Foreign Ministry.
During the virtual meeting, al-Zouba said Houthi attacks on commercial vessels threaten international navigation in the Red Sea, Bab al-Mandeb Strait and Gulf of Aden, accusing the Iran-aligned group of using Yemen to fuel wider regional escalation. She also called for increased international pressure on the Houthis to engage seriously in peace efforts.
Grundberg reaffirmed the importance of preventing further regional escalation and advancing a just and comprehensive political process to achieve security and stability in Yemen.

Trump, Republicans must contend with ‘lasting economic pain’ caused by war on Iran
US Democratic strategist Malbert Smith says Democrats are planning to “hammer home” two key messages heading into mid-term elections in November: that Trump failed to keep his promises to end inflation and avoid new foreign wars.
Even if Trump is able to secure a deal with Iran that effectively ends the conflict by November, the economic damage will continue to be felt, Smith added.
“This is lasting economic pain,” he told Al Jazeera. “Gas prices are not going to go down to where they were before, before election day, and that doesn’t even factor in the fact that we have higher food costs, we have higher diesel that makes transportation and goods more expensive, so it’s going to be lasting pain.”

Iran’s president says country has overcome ‘difficult conditions’ thanks to its people
Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian has delivered remarks thanking the Iranian people, who he says have resisted “pressure” from Iran’s enemies and helped the country overcome the “most difficult conditions” in its modern history.
“If the country [Iran] has remained standing until now, it is indebted to the people,” said Pezeshkian in comments carried by Iranian media.
He said while “the enemy” is trying to provoke Iranian people to protest, Iran’s government is resolved not to “let the people down”.
“If we stand with the people, no power can bring us to our knees,” said Pezeshkian.
