Israel says rocket fired from northern Gaza caused damage near Beit Hanoon crossing

As we reported earlier, the Israeli army said a rocket was fired from northern Gaza and fell into the area of the Beit Hanoon (known as Erez to Israelis) crossing.

In an update on Telegram, the army said the rocket caused damage to the area near the humanitarian truck compound.

Aid trucks, which are desperately needed in Gaza, have been using the Beit Hanoon crossing to enter the enclave. However, aid agencies have repeatedly warned that the amount of aid entering Gaza does not compare with the amount needed.

Trump wants Gaza war over ‘in any possible way’

As Gaza truce talks resume in Qatar, Dan Perry, a former regional editor for The Associated Press, says chances “are low” that a ceasefire deal gets done.

“Israel’s leaders are waiting for Donald Trump to take office because they think they’ll have greater leeway … to put more pressure on Gaza to finally get Hamas to relent. I’m not so sure this is going to a happy place soon,” he told Al Jazeera.

While Trump has indicated he wants the war on Gaza to end, Perry said that doesn’t mean a negotiated settlement that halts the bloodshed.

Palestinian Journalists Syndicate: Israel killed 10 journalists in December

In a statement, the syndicate said that five of the victims were killed in a “brutal attack while inside a live broadcast vehicle”, adding that eight family members of journalists were killed, three journalists’ homes were destroyed and five journalists were “severely injured”.

The committee said that about 20 reporters had been detained and banned from covering events, while seven others were imprisoned.

The association reiterated its commitment to defending press freedoms and “exposing the crimes” of the Israeli forces.

From October 7, 2023, to December 25, 2024, at least 217 journalists and media workers had been killed in Gaza. Five more were killed on December 26, when an Israeli air strike hit a news van near al-Awda Hospital.

‘Largest weapons sales’ from the US to Israel

This is one of the largest weapons sales from the US to Israel since the war began [reported earlier by AFP news agency], and these $8bn in arms sales would be thousands of bombs, including air-to-air missiles for Israeli fighter jets, as well as attack helicopters, artillery rounds and Hellfire missiles.

Also, guidance kits that could convert thousand-pound bombs into smart guided bombs, as well as the controversial bunker-buster bombs.

So, if this weapons sale is approved by Congress, it would still take quite a while for all of this hardware to reach Israel.

We’re expecting some to arrive this year and other [weapons] to arrive over the next few years, but of course, this is still pending congressional approval.

It’s notable that this is happening in the waning days of US President Joe Biden’s presidency.

Israeli police arrest protesters calling for return of captives

Israeli police have arrested demonstrators calling for the government to accept a ceasefire deal to secure the return of captives held in Gaza.

Al Jazeera has verified the footage below, posted by journalist Israel Frey, showing Israeli police carrying protesters and using horses to disperse crowds.

Frey said that two Israeli lawmakers, members of its parliament (known as the Knesset) were in the crowd when police charged it with horses.

Earlier, Defence Minister Israel Katz told the family members of a captive that efforts were under way to secure a captives deal and a delegation had been sent to Qatar for indirect talks with Hamas.

The Palestine Red Crescent Society (PRCS) says in a post on X that the attack also caused “significant” damage to several facilities of Al-Amal Hospital in Khan Younis in addition to injuring the person, who was the companion of a patient there.

Al-Amal Hospital serves as the headquarters of the PRCS and has been subjected to violent attacks by the Israeli army over the course of its war on the Gaza Strip.

The PRCS said Israel bombed a residential home adjacent to the hospital, which caused damage to it.

Hezbollah chief says group ready to respond to Israeli violations

Naim Qassem says Hezbollah is ready to respond to Israeli ceasefire violations.

Since the agreement came into effect in late November, Israel as well as Hezbollah and Lebanon have traded accusations of breaking the terms of the agreement. Several nations and international bodies have also levelled accusations of ceasefire violations at Israel, as it continues to regularly bomb areas in southern Lebanon.

“We have said that we are giving an opportunity to prevent Israeli violations and to implement the agreement and we will exercise patience,” Qassem said, emphasising that “this does not mean that we will wait the 60 days”.

Under the ceasefire agreement, the Israeli army will withdraw from southern Lebanon and the Lebanese army, alongside UN peacekeepers, will be deployed over 60 days.

However, reports indicate that the Israeli army intends to stay in southern Lebanon beyond the original 60-day pullout date stipulated by the deal.

Qassem added that “the leadership of the resistance determines when to exercise patience, when to take initiative and when to respond”.

This follows the publishing of a video by Hamas showing one of the captives being held in the Gaza Strip.

An organisation representing the captives’ families issued a call for Israelis to join them on the streets to demand the government close out the latest round of negotiations over a ceasefire and a deal to exchange Israeli captives for Palestinian prisoners.

The video below shows the crowd flooding Kaplan Street, an important thoroughfare in Tel Aviv.

Israeli defence minister says ‘efforts’ under way to secure captives’ release

According to his office, the minister told relatives of Liri Albag that “efforts are under way to free the hostages, notably the Israeli delegation which left yesterday [Friday] for negotiations in  Qatar”.

Earlier, Hamas released a proof of life video of Albag, who accuses the government of not caring about her and the other captives still being held in the enclave.

Rescuers struggle to retrieve missing bodies after Gaza City attack

As we reported earlier, an Israeli air raid on Gaza City has killed at least five people, with many others still under the rubble amid rescue efforts.

Mohsen Moahes, a paramedic in Gaza City, said the attack targeted a residential block sheltering displaced Palestinians who had fled from Jabalia in northern Gaza.

“A number of missing people remain here, and the Civil Defence is trying to get them out but with the insufficient resources, and the difficulty of the situation and the number of the internally displaced who were here, we are unable to recover them until now,” Moahes told Al Jazeera.

Mohammed Marzouq, who has been displaced due to Israel’s war on the enclave, also told Al Jazeera that he was waiting to get bread at the bakery when he “felt an earthquake” as the strike hit.

“Children, most of the casualties are children … If you go to the hospital you will see the headless and charred people,” he shouted.

UNIFIL says Israeli army actions ‘jeopardise’ Lebanon ceasefire

The UN’s peacekeeping force in Lebanon says its personnel observed an Israeli army bulldozer destroying a “blue barrel marking the line of withdrawal between Lebanon and Israel” in the southern village of Labbouneh this morning.

In a statement, the organisation also said its peacekeepers witnessed the Israeli army destroying an observation tower belonging to the Lebanese army, which was “immediately beside a UNIFIL position”.

“The [Israeli army’s] deliberate and direct destruction of both clearly identifiable UNIFIL property and infrastructure belonging to the Lebanese Armed Forces is a flagrant violation of resolution 1701 and international law,” the statement reads.

“We call on all actors to avoid any actions, including the destruction of civilian property and infrastructure, that could jeopardize the cessation of hostilities.”

The ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah went into effect at the end of November and stipulates that Israel withdraw its troops from southern Lebanon and hand over control to the Lebanese army.

Recent reports indicate that Israel intends to stay in Lebanon beyond the 60-day period set by the ceasefire agreement.
