Thousands pay respects to Pakistan’s ‘human rights giant’

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has paid tribute to Pakistani right activist and lawyer Asma Jahangir following her death by cardiac arrest, praising her courage in campaigns for justice and equality for all.

Thousands of people attended the funeral of prominent Pakistani lawyer and human rights activist, Asma Jahangir, in the city of Lahore.

Throughout her life, she spoke out for women and minority rights – and openly criticised Pakistan‘s military, intelligence and right-wing political parties.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said the world had lost a “human rights giant”.
