Do upcoming elections and a UN pledge on cholera offer hope?
The devastation of Hurricane Matthew forced Haiti to delay long-awaited presidential elections. The absence of an elected government has compounded Haiti’s struggles to respond to natural disasters. The hurricane has increased the risk of spreading Haiti’s cholera epidemic, which has killed some 10,000 people since UN peacekeepers brought it to the country after the 2010 earthquake. After years of denial, the UN recently acknowledged its role and vowed to help cholera victims. In part two of our conversation on Haiti’s challenges, we discuss whether the upcoming elections and the UN’s pledge offer the country a way forward.
