Maid in Malaysia

Many Indonesian migrant workers end up in Malaysia where some become victims of physical and sexual abuse.

Malaysia is one of Asia’s largest importers of foreign labour.

Workers are lured by agents with the promise of high salaries. But many find that the job they were offered do not exist or their employers do not pay their wages.

It is estimated that some 300,000 Indonesian women alone, work as domestic help across the country.

But these women are excluded from the protection of existing labour laws, leaving them vulnerable to exploitation, and in some cases, sexual abuse.

On this edition of 101 East, we ask who is protecting Indonesian maids working in Malaysia.
