India beat Pakistan by 6 runs: Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 – as it happened

Bangladesh have continued the run of upsets against the favourites at this year’s T20 World Cup with a two-wicket win against 2014 champions Sri Lanka on Saturday.

Pathum Nissanka was the top scorer for Sri Lanka with 44 while Towhid Hridoy hit 40 to lead Bangladesh’s chase after Sri Lanka post 124-9.

Nuwan Thushara took 4-18 in his four overs as Sri Lanka fought back, but it was too little, too late – especially after their own collapse with the bat from 99-3.

The match that everyone in the cricketing world had circled on their calendars ended up delivering a thrilling contest!

India, despite a subpar total of 119 on a tricky wicket, managed to beat Pakistan by six runs.

Pakistan, who looked in complete control in the first half of the innings, began to lose their way in the second.

Through a combination of disciplined bowling, ill-advised shots and dot ball pressure, their innings began to unravel.

This result now leaves them in a situation where they must win against both Canada and Ireland in order to have a chance at qualification into the Super Eights stage.

Mind you, USA and India both have four points after their two games, so they will certainly have something to say about that.

Aroom Munawar, 24, a student in Rawalpindi in Pakistan, feels sad about the loss: “There is regret [about not beating India despite a low score]. But, as they say, one should never lose hope. Pakistan needs to improve in all facets of the game. Bowling was better today, but it was the batting where we lacked.”

Siyam, 24, a Pakistan cricket fan in Rawalpindi, says “It was a small total which should have been chased. It doesn’t feel nice to be on the losing side when you have such a small total to chase. The pitch was not easy, but India dealt with the challenge and played better than us.”

Victorious India skipper Rohit Sharma gave his thoughts as well: “We didn’t bat well enough. Halfway through our innings, we were in good position.

“We didn’t put enough partnerships and fell short with the bat,” he said.

“We spoke about how every run matters on a pitch like that.

“There was enough in the pitch. It was a good wicket to be honest, compared to the last two games.

“With a bowling lineup like that, you feel confident to do the job.

“Halfway through, when they were batting, we got everyone together and said that if it can happen to us, it can happen to them.

“Little contributions from everyone can make a huge difference.

“He’s going from strength to strength [Bumrah]. We all know what he can do. Not going to talk too much about him. Want him to be in that mindset throughout the World Cup. He’s a genius, we all know that.

“Crowd was superb. They never disappoint wherever we play. I’m sure they’ll be going home with a big smile.

“It’s just the start. We have a long way to go.”

Losing Pakistan captain Babar Azam had this to say at the post-match presentation: “We bowled well. In the batting, we lost back-to-back wickets and had too many dot balls.

“Tactic was simple – to play normally,” he said.

“Just [focus on] strike rotation and [hitting] the odd boundary.

“But in that period [second half of the batting innings], we had too many dot balls. Can’t expect much from the tailenders.

“Our mind was to utilise the first six overs in the batting, and again we weren’t up to the mark.

“Pitch looked decent. Ball was coming on nicely. It was a little bit slow, and some balls [had] extra bounce.

“Have to win the last two matches. Will sit and discuss our mistakes but looking forward to the last two matches.”

The Indian pace spearhead had this to say after the match: “It feels really good. We felt we were a little under par, and the wicket got a little better after the sun came out.

“We were really disciplined so it feels good,” Bumrah said.

“Tried to hit the seam as much as I could, and tried to be as clear as I could with my execution and it all came out well so I felt happy.

“Felt like we were playing in India. Really happy with the support and that gives us energy on the field.

“We focus on the now. We’ve played two games and played really well. You stick to your processes and look to play well.”

Bumrah was undoubtedly the star of the show with figures of 3 for 14, but don’t let that take it away from the other bowlers, who all chipped in as well.

Babar and Rizwan began so strongly, and with the wicket looking to get better with the sun out, it just seemed a matter of time before Pakistan would knock off the runs.

But credit must go to the bowlers in believing they still had a chance, and they really turned it on towards the back end of the innings.

The boundaries dried up, and the batters started departing after having to go for some aggressive shots.

Pakistan’s campaign is in some turmoil now as they must beat Canada and Ireland in order to have a chance at progression into the Super Eights.

Arshdeep is on the money again with a yorker which Naseem just gets away for a single.

The Indian fans in the crowd give the loudest of cheers as their side survive by just six runs.

Pakistan will feel this was an opportunity missed after scuttling India out for 119.

But India have shown that some tight bowling and discipline in the field can make the difference.

With nothing to lose, Naseem goes for a mighty heave over the off side.

There is a boundary rider at deep point, and despite the dive, the ball ends up bouncing over the rope.

Arshdeep goes for the yorker again.

Naseem is wise to it as he paddles it over his head and down to the fine-leg boundary.

12 off 2 now.

Arshdeep is on the money as he allows just the one run to long off the ball before, before jamming in a yorker which the batters can only get a single off.

Arshdeep is tasked with bowling the final over.

He digs in a leg-side yorker which Imad gets inside of.

The ball continues behind to the keeper, but the batsmen are able to run a bye.

India think they have their man, though. They go up for an appeal, which the umpire obliges.

Replays confirm Imad had made some contact, so he is given his marching orders.

Naseem joins Shaheen with India now firmly in the driver’s seat.

Bumrah unleashes a low full toss to Iftikhar.

The batter, looking for the big mow over the leg side, ends up hitting it higher than he wanted.

Both Suryakumar and Arshdeep gather under it, with the latter taking it.

There is some concern about a collision, but Arshdeep is able to hold on.

Pakistan now need 18 off the final over, with new batter Shaheen coming out.
