- The Democratic Republic of the Congo beat Egypt 8-7 on penalties in the round of 16 in San Pedro, the Ivory Coast.
- The match ended 1-1 after extra time. Meschack Elia gave the Congolese the lead before Mostafa Mohamed levelled from the spot only to miss his penalty in the shootout. DR Congo keeper Lionel Mpasi scored the winning kick.
- Defeated finalists in the 2021 edition, Egypt failed to win a match at this year’s edition after three draws in the group stage where they finished second to Cape Verde in Group A.
- DR Congo similarly recorded three draws in their group to finish second behind Morocco in Group F.
- The Egyptians were without Mohamed Salah, who sustained a hamstring injury during their second game of the tournament, against Ghana.
- Guinea beat Equatorial Guinea 1-0 earlier in the day and will meet DR Congo in the quarterfinals on Friday.
