Nevertheless, the stronger types of coral species are holding on despite the unrelenting conditions and scientists are now trying to establish how they survive.
Scientists are keeping a close watch on what is happening on land, beneath the water, and what might be happening to the coral.
So far the team has recorded more than 80 different species of hard coral.
Sarah Clarke reports from Hong Kong.
