‘They need to listen’: US students demand action on gun control

A week after 17 people were killed at a high school in Florida, the local sheriff announced that he has ordered deputies to start carrying rifles on school grounds.

In Florida, where last week’s shooting took place, deputy sheriffs who patrol school grounds have now been told to carry rifles.

The state is at the centre of a big student mobilisation against gun violence.

On Tuesday, thousands of students gathered outside the Republican-controlled legislature in the state capital, Tallahassee, to demand change.
