What would Catalan independence look like?

People in the Catalonia region of Spain are insisting on going ahead with a referendum on independence on Sunday, despite the government declaring it illegal.

Catalan leaders will not say where the ballot boxes are, but if they manage to pull off the vote – and if Catalans vote yes – they must create a republic from scratch.
