Can diplomacy prevent another war in Gaza?

Israel is intensifying air strikes on the Gaza Strip in the worst violence since the 2014 war. Palestinian groups, including Hamas, are firing rockets into Israel.

Dozens of people have been killed. Diplomats from Egypt and Qatar, among other countries, are trying to broker a ceasefire.

The United Nations is warning of a descent into chaos, while the United States – Israel’s staunchest ally – insists Israel has a right to defend itself.

What can be done to avoid full-scale war?
