Jeopardising environmental safety?

Shortly after Barack Obama allowed drilling off US shores, an oil disaster looms.

Less than a month after Barack Obama, the US president, allowed drilling off US shores, an oil disaster is looming.

Some senior Republicans in Congress called the drilling announcement a step in the right direction but said Obama did not go far enough.

Environmental groups and some congressional liberals condemned the plan for endangering wildlife and coastal areas merely to give oil companies greater profits.

Inside Story discusses with guests: Todd Kent, a professor of US government and political science at Texas A&M University; Mamdouh Salameh, an oil expert and advisor to the World Bank; and Tyson Slocum, the director of the Public Citizen’s Energy Program.
