The moment the tsunami hit Japan

Residents rush to higher ground as houses are being crushed and cars washed away.

New footage is emerging of the moment the tsunami struck northeastern Japan.

Terrified residents rushed to the safety of higher ground and watched houses being crushed like tin cans and cars washed away.

Rescue teams are now searching for the missing along hundreds of kilometres of coast, combing through towns and villages reduced to splinters.

Al Jazeera’s Azhar Sukri reports.
