Donald Trump has condemned the killing of two men who were trying to protect a Muslim girl and her friend from a white supremacist on a commuter train in the US city of Portland on Friday.

In a tweet, Trump called the deaths unacceptable. It came after he faced mounting criticism for his silence over the attack - which happened on the first day of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

Al Jazeera's Rob Reynolds reports on how the deadly attacks on the victims, who have been hailed as heroes, have shocked the liberal city known for its religious and ethnic tolerance.
