Gerry Adams, president of Sinn Fein, has been called everything from terrorist to peacemaker, depending on who you ask.
He experienced torture, assassination attempts and has lost loved ones to the violence, or the “troubles”, that have plagued Northern Ireland.
But just six months ago, decades of sectarian conflict came to an end when Adams sat down with Protestant leader Ian Paisley at Stormont and the two agreed to create a power-sharing government in Northern Ireland. The move was hailed as a “new era” for the country.
On Thursday, Riz speaks with Gerry Adams to get his perspective on the joint government and whether or not a conflict with roots going back centuries can really be over.
You can watch Riz at 1900gmt, with repeats at 0000GMT, 0500GMT, and 0930GMT.
This episode aired on Thursday 20th September 2007.
