to defend their Olympic title
To have one Olympic champion in a family is achievement enough. To have two is remarkable.
New Zealand sisters Caroline and Georgina Evers-Swindell are two of the best rowers in the world. But recently something completely unfamiliar has happened to the Olympic champions – the twins have been beaten.
Now, they are on a mission to put the record straight, and defend their Olympic title.
Sportsworld’s Wayne Hay caught up with them.
Olympic glory will have to wait for another two years for those competing in the Winter Games. But that gives many countries time to hone their new talent.
For Poland, their best chances of winning gold have come in ski jumping. The sport is steeped in history and tradition in the Eastern European country which has already produced a world champion several times over.
Sportsworld’s Joanna Gasiorowska climbed to the top of the Tatra Mountains to find out more.
Nauru’s national sport
August sees a number of major sporting events – the Olympics among them. It is also the date for the Aussie rules international cup.
One of the countries involved will be Nauru which has high hopes, after all AFL is its national sport. Amazingly the world’s smallest island nation has not had an AFL league for almost two years since their local tournament was disbanded due to violence on and off the pitch.
Al Jazeera’s Dan Nolan reports.
Prison to the Premier League
It is a familiar story. The talented young athlete who makes some wrong choices and ends up in prison.
Many see their hopes of sporting stardom dashed, but Jamie Lawrence is one of the few success stories.
The former Jamaican international spent time in prison before football gave him a second chance in life.
Since his release, Lawrence has worked hard to educate young people, telling them how he went from prison to the Premier League.
