More than 100 killed in ‘gruesome’ Nigeria massacre

Villagers in Nigeria buried the bodies of dozens of farmers killed in a “gruesome” massacre that left at least 110 dead.

The UN says at least 110 civilians have been killed in a “gruesome attack” on two villages in northeastern Nigeria.

Survivors of the massacre are being treated in hospital with serious injuries and the UN says several women are thought to have been kidnapped.

“Forty-three dead bodies were buried and you saw it with your eyes,” said Abubakar Maina from the Rice Farmers Association. “Up to now, there are some bodies that are yet to be recovered from the bush. It’s a frightening situation.”

The armed group Boko Haram is suspected of being responsible.

Local officials say that in October, the group killed 22 farmers in two attacks outside the regional capital, Maiduguri.
