Coronavirus: EU faces criticism for lack of unity

The continent has almost half of all coronavirus infections worldwide, and two-thirds of deaths.

After the virus emerged in China, the epicentre of the COVID-19 disease soon shifted to Europe, overwhelming hospitals and forcing tens of millions of people into lockdown.

There are questions about whether the European Union will survive, because of what critics say was a muddled response to the pandemic.
