Rescue workers are searching for survivors after a powerful earthquake toppled buildings in Tainan, southern Taiwan, early on Saturday.

Firefighters and soldiers scrambled to the site of two collapsed residential high-rises with ladders, cranes and other equipment and extracted 221 people from the rubble.

At least seven people were killed and hundreds wounded after the 6.4 magnitude tremor struck in the middle of the night.
