Chevron is taking legal action to contest a court judgment in Ecuador which ordered the United States oil company to pay $18bn to indigenous communities whose land was damaged more than 20 years ago.
The Ecuadorian court had ruled that the company needs to take responsibility for an oil spill that allegedly caused massive environmental damage. Chevron claims the ruling was based on fraud and has appealed the decision in international courts.
