Inside Syria

Geneva talks: Progress towards peace?

As round one of UN-brokered talks come to an end, we analyse how negotiations are proceeding and what they can achieve.

It was a week of tense diplomacy between the Syrian government and the opposition at the United Nations headquarters in Geneva.

The first round of talks to try to end the war in Syria came to a close without any significant breakthrough.

No ceasefire was agreed, talks on a transitional government did not even begin, and a deal to allow aid into besieged rebel-held areas in the central city of Homs went nowhere.

A second round of talks is planned for February 10. But the Syrian government has yet to confirm whether it will attend.

In this episode of Inside Syria, we discuss the prospects of peace in war-torn Syria after the end of the first round of talks in Geneva.
