Nelson Mandela, the former South African president, is to spearhead a goodwill organisation called The Elders, aimed at solving world crises.

The group, the brainchild of entrepreneur Richard Branson and musician Peter Gabriel, hopes to draw on the wisdom of its members – statesmen and pioneering campaigners – to tackle problems such as conflict, Aids and climate change.
