September 7, 2011: The Yak-42 passenger plane crashes near Yaroslavl, Russia, killing 43 people. Only two people survive. The plane was carrying members of the Lokomotiv Yaroslavl ice hockey team to the Belarus capital Minsk and many international players were among the dead.
July 11, 2011: In Siberia, an Antonov-24 belonging to the Angara airline is carrying 35 passengers between Tomsk and Surgut when an engine catches fire. Five people are killed and 30 injured.
May 18, 2011: A Saab 340A passenger plane crashes 20km north of Prahuaniyeu, Argentina.
The 19 passengers and three crew members on board are all killed.
December 2010: A Tara Air de Havilland Canada DHC-6 crashes into a mountain in Nepal en route to Kathmandu, killing all 22 people on board.
November 4, 2010: An Aerocarribbean ATR-72-212 aircraft crashes into mountainous terrain in Cuba, killing all 68 people on board.
September 2010: A Conviasa Airlines ATR-42-320 carrying 51 people crashes into a steel foundry storage yard, killing 17 of those on board.
August 25, 2010: A Filair-operated aircraft crashes 2km from the airstrip at Bandundu, Democratic Republic of Congo, after a passenger brought aboard a crocodile hidden in a sports bag. The animal escaped, causing panic among the passengers, who all rushed to one end of the plane, causing an imbalance. Of the 21 people on board, just one survived.
August 24, 2010: A Chinese passenger plane overshoots the runway in Yichun, China, bursting into flames. Forty-nine of the 96 people on board are killed.
July 2010: An Airblue Airbus A321 passenger jet crashes into the Margalla Hills near Islamabad, Pakistan, while attempting to land, killing all 152 people on board.
May 2010: An Air India Boeing 737-800 crashes after overshooting the runway in Mangalore in southern India, leaving 158 dead.
April 2010: A Tupolev 154 crashes in dense fog while trying to reach Smolensk airport in Russia, killing 96 people – including Lech Kaczynski, the Polish president, and many other politicians.
November 5, 2010: A chartered Beechcraft aircraft carrying Italian oil company personnel suffers an engine failure shortly after takeoff from Karachi, Pakistan and crashes into a residential neighbourhood when attempting to make an emergency landing. All 21 people on board are killed.
June 2009: An Air France Airbus A330 runs into thunderstorms over the Atlantic and disappears, with 228 people on board.
June 2009: An Airbus A310-300 jet from Yemen carrying 153 people crashes into the Indian Ocean off the Comoros, leaving only one survivor.

May 2002: A China Airlines Boeing 747 breaks apart in mid-air and crashes into the Taiwan Strait, killing 225 people.
October 2001: A Scandinavian Airlines System jet collides with a small plane in heavy fog at Milan's Linate airport in Italy, killing 118 people.
September 2001: Al-Qaeda fighters hijack four US passenger planes, flying two of them into the twin towers of the World Trade Centre and another into the Pentagon. The fourth crashes into a field near Pittsburgh. More than 2,900 people are killed.
July 2000: An Air France Concorde, headed for New York, crashes into a hotel outside Paris shortly after takeoff. The death toll was 113, including four people on the ground.
