South Waziristan is seen as a major sanctuary for al-Qaeda fighters, who launch attacks on US and Nato forces in neighbouring Afghanistan.
The US is suspected of carrying out more than 30 missile attacks against targets on the Pakistan side of the Afghan border since August.
