The American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), one of the most powerful lobbying organisations in Washington, is expected to urge the US Congress to maintain financial support for Israel in its annual convention.

The group, which is made up of over 12,000 delegates, will try to make sure that the annual $3bn US military aid package to Israel will not be jeopardised as Congress carries out across-the-board spending cuts.
