Fiction vs reality in Oscar race

Smash-hit science-fiction Avatar pitted against reality-based Hurt Locker for top award.

The nominations for the Oscar Academy Awards have been announced, with two very different movies being seen as the main contenders in the "Best Picture" category.

The science-fiction movie Avatar, which has earned billions in ticket revenues, is one of them.

Its main rival, The Hurt Locker, may have been a commercial flop.

The two films pit the world of special effects and science fiction against the real-life dangers in Iraq.
