The security chief in Mexico’s central state of Zacatecas has resigned over a high-profile jailbreak last week, blamed on drug cartels.

As the government ramps up efforts to stem the flow of drugs, troops are being deployed across the country with what local residents call ‘devastating consequences’. They say civilians are often the victims of the offensive.
