At least 28 people have been killed and several others injured after a bus slid off a mountain highway in central Mexico.

"Twenty-eight people died and seven are seriously injured," Enrique Rojas, a police spokesman, said on Monday.
Authorities said the bus careened from a mountain pass connecting Mexico City and Tampico, the main city in northeastern Tamaulipas state, tumbling some 200 metre into a ravine.
About 50 rescue members from the Federal Preventive Police, firemen and a helicopter went to help the victims.

It is feared that the number of deaths could rise.

The police said the cause of the accident is under investigation.
