Aguero on hand with hat-trick for City

Manchester City and new signing Sergio Aguero show no sign of slowing down after the Argentinean scored a hat-trick to give his team a clinical 3-0 victory over Wigan in the English Premier League on Saturday. 

Meanwhile fellow title hopefuls Chelsea won their third game on the bounce defeating Sunderland 2-1. 

City’s victory fired them to the top of the Premier League table although Manchester United face Bolton in the late afternoon kick-off.

The result means Roberto Mancini’s side maintain their perfect start to the season and have now scored a remarkable 15 goals in their opening four matches.

Aguero took his tally to six goals in four with a first-half strike and two after the break in a one-sided game in Manchester where the damage could have been much worse for the visitors.

Mancini was purring with pleasure after the virtuoso display of Aguero, signed for a club-record $60 million from Atletico Madrid this summer.

“They were fantastic strikes. He is an incredible player. He is young and scored three fantastic goals,” Mancini said.

“We still need to improve. In the first half we had 15 chances to score and only got one goal.”

Goals from captain John Terry and Daniel Sturridge guided Chelsea to a 2-1 victory over Sunderland.

Terry fired Chelsea into an 18th-minute lead at the Stadium of Light following a free kick by Juan Mata, and Sturridge added the second goal six minutes after the restart with a backheeled effort which crept over the line.

South Korea forward Ji Dong-won pulled a goal back for Sunderland in stoppage time, but the strike came too late for the home side.

With 10 points from four games, the victory kept Chelsea up with the league pacesetters.

Chelsea’s troubled London rivals Arsenal finally claimed their first victory of the season with a solitary goal over Swansea on Saturday.
 
Andrei Arshavin exploited Swansea’s goalkeeping blunder to clinch a crucial 1-0 win. The Russia striker scored five minutes before half-time to bring an end to a six-match league run without a win stretching back into last season.

After collecting the ball, Swansea goalkeeper Michael Vorm tried to quickly clear it but his underarm throw from the right of the penalty area deflected off Angel Rangel’s heel. And the loose ball fell to Arshavin, who found the net from a tight angle.

Liverpool lost three precious points at Stoke to bring their unbeaten start of the season to a halt.

The Reds lost 1-0 after Stoke gained the advantage when Jonathan Walters scored a first-half penalty.

Walters got the decisive breakthrough after Jamie Carragher fouled him in the box and the Stoke striker smashed the 21st-minute penalty past Jose Reina.

The penalty was met with bemusement from Liverpool coach Kenny Dalglish.

“The first four league games have had contentious decisions in them and every one has gone against us. I just cannot see how it is a penalty kick,” he said.

There was joy for another London side with Tottenham putting their first Premier League points on the board after new signing Emmanuel Adebayor helped them to a 2-0 win at Wolves.
 
Adebayor made his first start since joining on loan from Manchester City and opened the scoring midway through the second half after collecting a pass from fellow Tottenham newcomer Scott Parker.

Jermain Defoe doubled their lead after playing a one-two with Niko Kranjcar before drilling a low shot past goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey.

And at Goodison Park, Stiliyan Petrov and Gabriel Agbonlahor scored as Aston Villa twice came from behind to earn a 2-2 draw at Everton and preserve their unbeaten Premier League start.

Everton hardly seemed bothered by the sale of Mikel Arteta to Arsenal as they claimed a deserved halftime lead through Leon Osman’s goal in the 19th minute.

Petrov equalised in the 63rd only to see Leighton Baines restore the hosts’ lead with a penalty six minutes later.

But Agbonlahor’s header in the 83rd earned Villa the point and left Everton frustrated at the lack of reward for a fluid attacking display.

The game was preceded by a peaceful protest outside the stadium by several hundred supporters frustrated at a lack of investment under chairman Bill Kenwright.

It is the sort of protest that will not be happening anytime soon outside Man City or Chelsea’s grounds, with the gulf between Premier League sides appearing to widen.
