Will mail-in voting affect US election night results?

Will mail-in votes delay US presidential election results? Legal scholar Justin Levitt explains.

There are a lot of things that seem different about voting in the 2020 US presidential election.

Interest in voting is high, but so is worry about the COVID pandemic and fears that a possible transfer of power may not be entirely peaceful.

While analysts say voter turnout this year may be the highest in decades, nearly half of registered voters expect the process to be difficult, compared with only 15 percent 2 years ago.

As more people than ever before vote by mail-in ballot, there are fears the system may not be able to keep up.

Despite these concerns, it is important to remember that the US does have the tools to ensure everyone can vote in this year’s election.

So, what should we expect to happen on November 3?

Legal scholar Justin Levitt explains.
