California city bans new oil drilling

Carson becomes first city in US state to impose ban in bid to prevent petroleum companies from fracking.

Carson has become the first city in California to impose a ban against any new oil drilling, a move fuelled by fears that petroleum companies would use fracking techniques, which could be harmful to the environment.

The Los Angeles suburb already managed to stop a company from drilling for 45 days and wants to extend the ban.

Al Jazeera's Jennifer London reports from Carson.
