Spain’s Catalans seek referendum vote

Government calls demand illegal but National Day expected to boost region’s calls for referendum on self-rule.

Goverment leaders in Spain have been resisting calls from the Catalonia region for a referendum on independence.

The government calls the demand illegal as the National Day on Thursday is expected to increase those calls for self-rule.
