Separatist feelings run high in Yemen’s south

Southern Movement calls for protests in favour of independence amid multiple crises confronting weak central government.

As the Yemeni air force targets al-Qaeda fighters in Baydah province, on the ground Shia Houthi fighters are battling al-Qaeda and its Sunni tribal allies in an area south of the capital Sanaa.

As if all this is not enough, the country’s weak central government faces a growing secessionist movement in the south. The activists there call themselves the Southern Movement and they have called for protests in favour of independence.

Al Jazeera’s Omar al Saleh reports from the port city of Aden, in a part of Yemen where separatist feelings are running high.
