US sugar industry opposes controls

Producers push image of the sweet substance as a natural product amid increasing questions about its effect on health.

It is a common staple across the world, but too much sugar in people’s diets has been blamed for causing diabetes, tooth decay and even dementia.

The sugar industry says it is not harmful to consume the staple in moderation. However, some researchers say the manufacturers are trying to mislead consumers by not giving an official definition of moderation.

Some campaigners are calling for stricter controls on the sweet substance that would be similar to those placed on the tobacco trade.
