Fighting intensifies in Syria’s Aleppo

More civilians deaths may be imminent as regime forces plan offensive to take control of city’s historic centre.

Diplomats have been discussing in the Qatari capital Doha support for Syrian opposition fighters, but while they do, fighting for control of Aleppo’s historic city centre has intensified.

The opposition fighters say they are trying to protect people in this neighbourhood from snipers loyal to President Bashar al-Assad. But as Al Jazeera’s Charles Stratford explains, with an expected military offensive, it means more civilians will be killed in the coming battle.

The report is followed by an interview with Arsalan Iftikhar,  senior editor of the Islamic Monthly magazine and an international human rights lawyer, from Washington DC.
