Poor air quality costs Chinese province dear

Reliance on coal energy blamed by many for Shanxi’s high congenital-defects rate, which is six times national average.

Over one million babies are born with defects in China every year. In Shanxi province, the rate of children born with congenital defects is six times the national average.

The disparity is largely blamed on poor air quality. The region relies heavily on coal energy production and is considered one of the most polluted places in the world.

As Al Jazeera’s Marga Ortigas reports from Jiu Ji, many feel cleaning up the environment is crucial for the future of China’s next generation.
