Merkel met with protests in Portugal

Demonstrators blame German chancellor for austerity measures their government has implemented.

The German chancellor has been met by protests on a short visit to Portugal.

Angela Merkel was in Lisbon to show her support for the country’s economic reforms.

Portugal is half-way through a three-year, $99bn bailout programme but public anger over austerity is growing with many people blaming Germany.
