Mexico drug violence claims staggering toll
Local media estimates say more than 12,000 people were killed in drug-related violence in 2011.

Mexican media estimates suggest that more than 30 people were killed every day, on average, in 2011 due to drug violence in the country.
Felipe Calderon, the Mexican president, is to complete his six-year term this year, and will be replaced by the winner of a presidential poll. According to local media’s figures, about 50,000 people have been killed since the start of Calderon’s crackdown on drug gangs in 2006.
