War on Drugs declared lost

Forty years after US president Richard Nixon declared a “war on drugs”, the Global Commission on Drug Policy has declared that the war has been lost.

While more and more people have been incarcerated around the world, the past decade has been marked by a rise in the use of cocaine, opiates and marijuana.

The War on Drugs has also contributed to alarming murder rates, Mexico being hit the hardest with 34,000 lives lost in just four years.
