With Colombia’s general elections set for Sunday, outgoing president Alvaro Uribe will leave office in August after serving two four-year terms, during which he reportedly maintained popularity.

Although he has been praised for extending welfare programmes, improving the economy, and restoring security, analysts have said Colombia suffers from one of the worst cases of poverty and unequal income distribution in Latin America.

Many accuse the government of developing social programmes that favour the wealthy.
