Afghan concern over ‘Jirga’ delay

In Afghanistan, “Jirga” is a centuries old traditional assembly of tribal leaders from across the country – who meet to discuss matters that concern the people and try to make decisions by consensus.

The assembly was supposed to take place at the end of this month, but the Afghan government suspended it until mid-May.

The decision to delay it has sparked widespread suspicion.
